THE MIND
Now that we are saved we need to realize some things according to the word of God. We need to understand that when we received Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior, that God gave us His nature. He created a right spirit within us. We use to be dead in sins but Christ made us alive unto God by His act of obedience on the cross. The bible says we are new creatures in Christ Jesus, old things have passed away and all things have become new. But your body and your mind remained the same. Your body and your mind are not born again but your spirit is born again or new. God changed your heart (your spirit) but it is our responsibility to do something with our minds and our bodies. This week we are dealing with our minds . . . . .
Josh.1 (KJV)
[7] Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.
[8] This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
[9] Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Psalm 1 (Amplified)
[1] Blessed (Happy, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable) is the man who walks and lives not in the counsel of the ungodly [following their advice, their plans and purposes], nor stands [submissive and inactive] in the path where sinners walk, nor sits down [to relax and rest] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather,
[2] But his delight and desire are in the law of the Lord, and on His law (the precepts, the instructions, the teachings of God) he habitually meditates (ponders and studies) by day and by night.
[3] And he shall be like a tree firmly planted [and tended] by the streams of water, ready to bring forth its fruit in its season; its leaf also shall not fade or wither: and everything he does shall prosper [and come to maturity].
Proverbs 3 (Amplified)
[5] Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding.
[6] In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.
Romans 12 (Amplified)
[1] I appeal to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship.
[2] Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].
2Cor.10 [KJV]
[3] For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
[4] (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
[5] Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Eph.4 [KJV]
[17] This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
[18] Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
[19] Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
[20] But ye have not so learned Christ;
[21] If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
[22] That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
[23] And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
[24] And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Phil.4 [KJV]
[8] Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Col.3 [KJV]
[1] If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
[2] Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
[3] For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
[4] When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
[5] Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
[6] For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
[7] In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
[8] But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
[9] Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
[10] And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
Eph.2 [KJV]
[1] And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
[2] Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
[3] Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
Comments
Gods instructions for the past passages are basically the same message. He wants His children to understand that His word must become 1st priority in the life of any believer that wants to prosper in life and experience good success.
We must meditate (ponder, think on, keep in our minds) the word of God both day and night. That doesnt mean we are to read the bible 24 hours a day. But we are to have our minds filled with the word throughout the day and find some time in the morning to read the word and in the evening to read the word. It is nothing more but a refresher so that we can stay focused on what God is saying above what the world is saying. The world has its way of making sure you meditate on the things they are trying to push with television, radio, books, movies, etc. It tries to dictate the worlds values so that it will be accepted by society. God is telling us if you want to have good success and prosper in this life, you need MY values (from the word) above what the world is saying. The world has its own standards that are not in line with the word of God. How will you know what Gods viewpoint on a certain subject is if you dont know His word?
Not only are we to think about the word but also keep it in your mouth. Speak the word of God. When you are alone and have time to read the word, speak it out loud. That way your mind has to pay attention to what you are saying and your ears will hear the word also. The bible says faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
Some of the ways to get the word into your heart are through your eyes, through your ears and through your mouth. Your goal is to get that anointed word in your heart so that it builds you up, feeds you spiritually and when God wants you to share His word with someone else, out of the abundance of your heart your mouth can speak Gods word. You wont have to question is this Gods thoughts, its Gods thoughts because its straight from Gods word.
Make studying the word a habit that you do everyday. Just like we have certain habits we just do all the time. The studying of Gods word need to be the most out of control habit that we have.
God also encouraged us to cast down thoughts that come to your mind and speak against the word of God. Reason being is that those thoughts want to create a stronghold. To stop you from thinking on Gods word. Your job is to cast them down as soon as they come. When a thought pops in my head that is against Gods word, I must speak the word of God that comes against it.
For example:
I am in a store and the cashier walks towards the back and a thought says you can take what you want and walk out. I must cast down that thought with the word the Lord said thy shalt not steal. I am choosing to obey Gods word over what the world dictates.
Anything that comes to you and tries to exalt itself above what the word of God says, cast it down by the power of Gods word.
An experiment:
Start counting in your mind from 1 to 20. When you reach the #10 say with your mouth thank you Lord Jesus. Did you stop counting in your mind? Yes. Well when thoughts come to your mind that are not in obedience to the word of God, cast them down by saying Father in Jesus name I bind that thought up and speak Gods word against that thought.
Remember this pertains to the thoughts that comes to your mind and doesnt support Gods word. If it supports Gods word its okay to meditate on, but if it is clearly not of God, cast it down. Get it out of your head by any means necessary. Even if you got to start singing yes Jesus loves me for the bible tells me so.
Phillippians 4:8 tells us what we should be thinking on. Think on things that are lovely, just, honest, of a good report, etc.
Ephesians 4 & Colossians 3 deal with our need to renew our minds with the word of God. We need to put off our old nature and put on the Lord Jesus Christ. How, by renewing our mind with Gods word. It will not renew itself, we must spend time spoon feeding it with the words of the Everlasting God.
It is our responsibility to make sure our minds are renewed with the word of God.
Memory verse:
Psalm 1:2
But his delight and desire are in the law of the Lord, and on His law (the precepts, the instructions, the teachings of God) he habitually meditates (ponders and studies) by day and by night.
